Betterfelt is a Danish company based on the Scandinavian design tradition. Betterfelt imports high quality felted woollens such as slippers, shoes, clothes and interior decorations from the company’s own workshop in Kathmandu in Nepal. The Sustainable Trade Credit covers prepayments for shoes to Betterfelt which are afterwards resold to the German shoe company Rohde.
From the beginning the company has been aiming towards an environmentally friendly production. In the extend possible the wool is cleaned mechanically and without the use of carbonation, which is a strain on the environment. When dying the wool, they only use the non-metallic colours.
Betterfelt buys the whole production from the company in Nepal which employs about 90 people in Kathmandu who are paid a fair salary compared to local standards. The company’s production complies with UN Global Compact and Betterfelt is on the verge of being approved by the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO).
Nepal is one of the poorest countries in the world and over 30 % of the population lives below poverty line. Therefore Betterfelt’s import of felted products has a great impact on the local population in Kathmandu.
